8 The Catholic Church of Portiunkula
This circular church building dates from 1659 and is an important monument to the Counter-Reformation. It is a reminder that even many years after the “Miesbach Reformation” (1561-84), Catholic doctrine had to be strengthened. The church was built as a bequest of Count Wihelm of Hohenwaldeck (from 1583/35-1655) (6). It is dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi (picture), a popular saint of the Counter-Reformation.
